Aspiring participants will come to the Polish capital for a pre-selection round scheduled for April 23–May 4.

Artur Szklener, director of Poland's National Chopin Institute, the main organiser of the event, said the selected candidates were chosen from 642 pianists representing 54 countries who submitted video recordings for review.

Szklener told a press conference in Warsaw that this was a record-high number of applicants for the competition, up from around 500 in 2021 and 450 in 2015.

China leads the field with over 60 participants in the pre-selection round, followed by South Korea, Japan, Poland, Canada and Italy.

Brazil, Thailand, Malaysia, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan will also be represented.

The pre-selection jury, chaired by Poland’s Wojciech Świtała, includes Polish and international pianists Ludmil Angelov, Nikolai Demidenko, Krzysztof Jabłoński, Kevin Kenner, Marc Laforêt, Alberto Nosè, Piotr Paleczny, Ewa Pobłocka and Katarzyna Popowa-Zydroń.

The panel will select around 80 participants for the October competition.

Several candidates will gain direct entry, bypassing the pre-selection stage due to prior successes in other major competitions.

Founded in 1927, the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw is one of the world's oldest and most prestigious piano contests.

Past winners include renowned pianists such as Maurizio Pollini, Martha Argerich, Garrick Ohlsson, Krystian Zimerman, Rafał Blechacz, Seong-Jin Cho and Bruce Liu.
